Country lanes with a seaside finish.  Due to possible snow this ride is shortened. If the road is not rideable safely, we'll take a walk to Hadleigh farm cafe and look at the castle ruins. Weather permitting, we'll ride to Southend on the cycle lane by the sea. Swimming is optional. Alternatively, Leigh-on-Sea old village has a pretty high street with a few pubs, serving food, that's a possible finish. Ashridge.  A ride to the National Trust (NT) estate at Ashridge. Some off-road riding but mountain bikes not necessary. Ride is suitable for touring and hybrid bikes but may not suit bikes with skinny tyres or small wheels. If you have a NT card, please bring it in case we decide to go up the Bridgewater Monument. Stops for refreshments at local pubs and the NT cafe. At 60km, this is a long ride for a 1* so it would not suit beginners, the very slow or those with commitments back in London early in the evening. * Easier and shorter rides – about 50km (30 miles) – which are ideal if you are new to cycle touring or prefer a more leisurely ride. Accompanied older children welcome although it is advisable to contact the ride leader beforehand.
** Medium distance 55-85km (35-55 miles) – steady pace yet time to enjoy lunch, etc.
*** Faster and generally longer 70-110km (45-75 miles) and often hilly – suitable for a light touring or road bike ...
**** Faster again, averaging 26-28m/h and approximately 90-100km (55-65 miles), with a brief cafe stop for lunch. These rides are for experienced Audax or Sportive riders training for their next event, or for those who just like it hard. Bring a summer road bike or, if the conditions are likely to be wet, a light winter bike with full mudguards and, preferably, a long rear mudflap. Be prepared to do your turn on the front.
Off-road Mainly on tracks or trails, perhaps muddy – not suitable for lightweight road bikes.
